Taal Taiyaar

May 9, 2026/FILMMAKING

“The sound begins with the hands that make it.”

Taal Taiyaar follows the making of the Tabla, a journey through wood, leather, fire, patience, and the skilled hands that bring a musical instrument to life.

The Process

This documentary was created as part of my Master’s programme for a Fundamentals of Filmmaking module, within the non-fiction category.

Being deeply interested in music and having studied Indian classical music myself, I wanted to document something I had always been curious about: how an instrument that carries so much sound, tradition, and history actually comes into being.

We began with research, looking into the craft of Tabla making and the people who have kept this practice alive. The film then took us into the workshop, where the process unfolded slowly, from shaping the wood and preparing the materials to stretching, tuning, and giving the Tabla its final voice. Rather than treating the instrument simply as an object, we wanted to stay close to the people and the process behind it.

The Approach

We approached the film observationally, allowing the workshop and its rhythms to guide the camera.

The sounds of cutting, shaping, hammering, stretching and tuning became an important part of the film itself. Instead of heavily stylising the visuals, we tried to let the textures of the workshop, the hands of the craftsmen, and the natural pace of the process speak for themselves.

“Before the Tabla becomes an instrument, it passes through many hands, many materials, and many hours of patience.”

The Film

Taal Taiyaar is ultimately a film about making, but also about the knowledge carried through making. Every Tabla that reaches a musician has already lived a small journey of its own. The film tries to capture that journey before the first note is ever played.
